Amalgam fillings

Amalgam fillings are silver in colour and are probably the best known and most commonly used type of filling. Dental amalgam is made up of various chemicals including mercury which on its own can be harmful, yet when it is combined with the other materials involved it is perfectly safe. There has been extensive testing of the safety of dental amalgam over the last 100 years, and they have found no reason to believe that amalgam is medically harmful.

Amalgam fillings are a practical solution due to the resilience of the material and the fact that they are the extremely cost effective due to their availability on the NHS. Other types of fillings, such as tooth coloured composite fillings or gold fillings, are considered cosmetic dental treatments and are not available to NHS patients.
